Why did it take so long for an active civil rights movement to begin in the LGBT community?
Unlike women and members of racial or ethnic minorities, LGBT people were invisible to the larger society and could thus escape discrimination if they remained closeted. It also was dangerous to make their LGBT status public because it could result in arrest, job loss, or hate crimes.

-If a person's religious beliefs conflict with the law or lead to bias against other groups, should the government protect the exercise of those beliefs? Why or why not?
The government should not allow people to exercise religious beliefs if they interfere with the Constitutional rights of others or lead to discrimination. Doing so would be allowing one group to force their beliefs or practices on others and would thus treat them as more important than other groups of people. The rights of Christian fundamentalists, for example, are not greater than the rights of gay men or lesbians. Religious belief should be accommodated but not at the expense of others.
