Deck 11: Managing Successful Products, Services, and Brands
1
In starting to set a final price:
Think about your customers and competitors and set three possible prices.
In monopolistic competition, there are many sellers who offer differentiated products to the buyers. Although there are various non-price factors to compete, firms in monopolistic markets also face some competition over price range they set.
Considering a monopolistic market, following three prices for different units of good sold have been set.

For Washburn, what are examples of ( a ) shifting the demand curve to the right to get a higher price for a guitar line (movement of the demand curve) and ( b ) pricing decisions involving moving along a demand curve.
a. Movement of the demand curve.  Movement of the demand curve to the right occurs with the signature guitars-establishing an inelastic, price-insensitive demand for the product.
b. Moving along a demand curve.  Movement along a demand curve is illustrated byBill Abel's analysis of whether he should set the unit price of the new line of guitars at $299, $329, or $349.  These points are simply different points on the same demand curve, not on different demand curves.

What are some similarities and differences between skimming pricing, prestige pricing, and above-market pricing
Similarities
The similarities between skimming pricing, prestige pricing, and above-market pricing are as follows:
• Each approach involves setting a premium price for a product. These hope that the consumers will relate high quality with high price.
• Each pricing strategy is most effective when the demand for the product is inelastic, consumers are not price sensitive.
Difference
• A skimming price strategy is generally used when there are no competitively positioned products, as well as prices, to be used as benchmark.
• An above-market price approach requires a competitive reference price or point.
• Prestige pricing strategy, on the other hand, involves a greater subjective element than the other two strategies.
