Deck 14: Masonry Construction
1
Briefly explain the difference between load-bearing and non-load-bearing structural clay tile.
Structural clay tile may be load-bearing or non-load-bearing. Load-bearing units may form an unfaced wall, or they may be used as a backup wall and faced with another material. Non-load-bearing tile walls are used as interior partitions, fireproofing barriers, and masonry screens.
2
Explain how rubble and ashlar masonry are patterned.
Stone laid in mortar may be rubble or ashlar masonry. Rubble refers to stone found naturally in irregular shapes and sizes. Ashlar masonry uses units cut into squared shapes. Stone may be laid in a random or coursed pattern. The coursed pattern maintains horizontal lines, while the random pattern uses irregular courses.
3
Explain why masonry is frequently used in passive solar design.
Because of masonry's high thermal mass, the material is frequently used in passive solar designs that capture and use solar radiation to help heat a building. While most building materials absorb heat, masonry's high density and mass allow it to absorb heat slowly and retain it longer. Masonry floors and walls store solar heat during the day, and radiate it back into the interior when temperatures drop at night.
