Usually, no. However, use them if instructed to do so. In an essay, topic sentences, which will generally comprise the first sentence of each paragraph, serve most of the functions of headings.

Finally, the process of developing a thesis statement helps clarify the author's ideas and can prevent drifting off-topic.
