Compare a "civil union" and "civil marriage" in terms of rights and responsibilities.
The rights, responsibilities and benefits associated with a civil union vary from country to country and state to state, unlike a civil marriage in which rights, responsibilities and benefits are recognized across state and international lines. Civil marriage also enjoys greater social acceptance and respect. This double standard is maintained by the DOMA and is unjust since it denies basic rights and respect by marital status.
