Deck 5: Sexual Intimacy: Biology and Pleasure
1
Compare and contrast menopause and male climacteric symptoms in terms of fatigue, sexual desire, depression, and sleep patterns.
Side effects of menopause are more troublesome for some women than for others. These side effects include increased fatigue, deceased sexual desire, increased depression, and interrupted sleep patterns. Research on male climacteric is more limited than on menopause. Side effects of male climacteric includes increased fatigue, decreased sexual desire, increased depression, but is less impactful on many males.
2
Cultural traditions and rituals impact sexual norms as noted in the discussion of female genital mutilation (FGM). Outline how the Female Genital Mutilation Act of 2003 exceeds the 1985 Act.
The FGM Act of 2003 makes it a crime to not only carry out FGM, but also to aid, abet, counsel, or procure an act of FGM even in countries where FGM is legal. This act demands that legal, medical, family education, family service communities work with families to understand the health implications of FGM.
3
Compare and contrast the following four theories of human sexual response: Kaplan's Triphasic, Zilbergeld and Ellison, Walen and Roth, and Basson.
The Kaplan's Triphasic Theory includes three sexual response phases (desire, sexual excitement, and orgasm) with an emphasis on desire and stimulation of the cortex and limbic systems that trigger the hormones initiating sexual response. While the Zilbergeld and Ellison Theory recognizes the importance of sexual desire, they proposed a five part model that also includes physical readiness (erection and vaginal lubrication) along with desire, arousal, orgasm and satisfaction. The Walen and Roth Theory emphasizes the impacts of family, culture, and societal perceptions on what is appropriate sexual response and functioning and how these impacts influence couples' sexual behavior and satisfaction. The Basson Theory adds a layer of gender-based distinctions and challenges former theories to not mix female and male sexual response patterns.
