Deck 15: Developing Knowledgeable, Responsible and Caring Students

Theorists have contended that Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) 'enhances academic development, helps students develop self-management and self-control and reduces conflict among students'. Discuss what this means for you as a teacher and your students and describe what you would do in the first two weeks of the school year to develop your students' social and emotional learning.
The student's response should cover the following:
-There are SEL skills and attitudes that students (and teachers) need to develop and this can only occur if programs are carefully selected, planned and implemented.
-Goleman (1995) identified five emotional competencies basic to SEL (see dot points near bottom of page 271).
-First step is for the teacher to reflect on their current approach to social and emotional learning using strategies suggested in checklist 'What I am doing to foster social and emotional leaning (SEL) in my classroom' at the top of page 272.
-Teachers should check where social and emotional learning is addressed in the Australian Curriculum for their year level.
-There is a range of strategies teachers could use in the first two weeks of teaching to develop SEL (see dot points and elaboration on page 273).
-There are also examples that could be used to explore SEL skills with primary school students at the bottom of page 274).
