1
Walmart tends to have the best retailing system,the best distribution system,and the best marketing system of the modern retailers.It also dominates the marketplace for retail sales to a greater extent than any other retailer.What is the source of Walmart's ability to capture value in the marketplace?
Walmart initially had a first-mover advantage in many Southern and rural communities as the first and often only discount retailer located in these communities.This first-mover advantage created both an entry barrier that deterred other retailers from opening in these small communities and market power for Walmart.Walmart also developed efficient team capabilities in retailing,buying,and distribution.The value of the Walmart team is greater than the cost of individual parts.

A)reduce transaction costs for both Dell and the customer.
B)reduce transaction costs for the customers only.

Let Q be the number of printer-computer combinations sold in the market and let MC of both these products equal $0.Let the demand for both the products be given as Q = 12 - (Pp + Pc),where Pp and Pc are the prices of printers and computers.What are the profits of each firm when they decide to cooperate,and what happens if they decide to go alone?
First,if they decide to cooperate,then the total demand is taken as given and one price is set for the combined product.Thus,the demand curve becomes: Q = 12 - P and inverting this we get:
P = 12 - Q and therefore MR = 12 − 2 Q.If MR = MC,then 12 − 2 Q = 0 and hence Q = 6 units.
This means P = 12 − 6 = $6.Therefore,the revenue from this is $6 x 6 = $36.Now if they decide to go alone,then each firm will set its MR = MC.Then we have the following:
Pc = 12 − Pp − Q and hence its MRc = 12 − Pp − 2 Q.Likewise for the other company we have,
Pp = 12 − Pc − Q and hence its MRp = 12 − Pc − 2 Q.
Setting MRc = MRp we find Pp = Pc.
Therefore Q = 12 − 2 Pp.So for the printer company,we have
MRp = 12 − Pp − 2 (12 − 2 Pp)or
MRp = 12 − Pp − 24 + 4 Pp or
MRp = − 12 + 3 Pp.
Setting this equal to MC = $0,we get Pp = $4 = Pc.
Hence,Q = 12 − 8 = 4 units.
Therefore,the combined revenue is $4 x 4 = $16.
It is better to cooperate and offer combined products.
