Stanley Milgram's most famous study was on obedience, in which participants were instructed to administer increasingly severe electric shocks to a "learner" (who was actually a confederate) whenever they made a mistake on a memory task. The study sought to understand how far people were willing to go in obeying authority figures, and the results were disturbing: 65% of participants were willing to administer the maximal shock level of 450 volts, despite the learner's screams of pain and pleas to stop.
