Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg were both revolutionary Socialists who co-founded the Spartacus League, which later became the Communist Party of Germany. They were leaders of the unsuccessful Spartacist uprising in Berlin in January 1919, which sought to establish a communist government in Germany. Both Liebknecht and Luxemburg were subsequently arrested and murdered by Freikorps soldiers loyal to the German government. They are considered martyrs by the left-wing and socialist movements.
