Charophytes are the closest living relatives of land plants and share many characteristics with them, such as the presence of cellulose in their cell walls, similar chloroplast structure and DNA, and similar reproduction (including the use of sporopollenin, a tough polymer that protects spores and pollen from desiccation). Chlorophytes, chrysophytes, gametophytes, and embryophytes are all different groups of algae, but they are not as closely related to land plants as charophytes are.
