Cynical hostility, characterized by mistrust and resentment towards others, has been found to be the most strongly related to the development of coronary heart disease (CHD). Studies have shown that individuals high in cynical hostility have an increased risk of developing CHD, as well as higher rates of mortality from cardiovascular disease. Conflictual hostility, familial hostility, major depressive hostility, and oppositional defiant hostility have not been found to have as strong a relationship to CHD.
