During muscle contraction, the H zone and I bands narrow as the thin filaments slide past the thick filaments towards the center of the sarcomere. The A bands do not shorten, but instead remain the same length as the thick filaments throughout the contraction. The Z discs also do not move farther apart, but instead move closer together towards the center of the sarcomere.
