Box 25-3 lists the risk factors for SIDS. Other risk factors may be modified to reduce the incidence of SIDS. Maternal cigarette smoking during pregnancy has been found to be a major risk factor for SIDS and appears to be dose dependent. Postnatal exposure to cigarette smoke further increases the risk. Some studies have found breastfeeding to be partly protective against SIDS, but this finding has been inconsistent. Overheating and loose bedding have both been associated with SIDS. Bed sharing has been shown to be a hazardous practice. Overlying remains an important cause of unexplained death in infants and should be considered along with other forms of inadvertent suffocation during a death scene investigation.
