Ion pumps such as the sodium-potassium pump require energy from ATP hydrolysis to transport ions against a concentration/electric-potential gradient, from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration. This process is known as active transport. The produced gradient can then be used by the cell for various purposes, such as nerve impulse transmission in the case of the sodium-potassium pump.
