The patient should be placed on their back to begin CPR, unless there is an obstruction in the airway that cannot be cleared. In that case, the patient should be placed in the recovery position on their side with the head turned to the side to help maintain an open airway. The other positions (on the left or right side, in the prone position, or in the Sims' position) are not recommended for starting CPR.
