The Constitution allowed for slavery to continue, but it also included the Three-Fifths Compromise which counted enslaved individuals as three-fifths of a person for the purposes of determining representation in the House of Representatives. Additionally, the Constitution included language allowing Congress to regulate interstate commerce, which could potentially be used to regulate or even end the slave trade. However, it wasn't until the passage of the 13th Amendment in 1865 that slavery was officially abolished in the United States.
