Zaibatsu refers to large industrial and financial corporations that dominated the Japanese economy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These corporations controlled vast amounts of wealth and resources, and exerted significant influence over the Japanese government and society. While some zaibatsu did clash with the government at times, overall they played a major role in the economic development of Japan and helped to establish the country as a major industrial power. By the 1920s, however, the power of the zaibatsu was already beginning to wane, and many of these corporations would ultimately be dismantled after World War II.
