Many colonial settlers saw Native Americans as obstacles to their expansion and believed that they needed to be removed or pushed further west in order for colonists to claim more land. This mentality led to numerous conflicts and wars between Native American tribes and European colonists. While some settlers did see Native Americans as potential laborers or allies, this was not the prevailing attitude. The idea of converting Native Americans to Christianity and integrating them into colonial society was also not widely held until later in American history.
