The uprising of the ulama and janissaries in 1807 deposed Selim III and temporarily set back his reforms. Mahmud II came to power after Selim III's death in 1808, but this was not a direct result of the uprising. The Tanzimat Reforms did not occur until several decades later. The Rose Chamber Rescript was a later attempt to limit the power of the janissaries.
