In 1914, Japan seized German holdings in China and requested that the Chinese government give them additional economic and political advantages in return for their cooperation. This led to the twenty-one Demands which were a set of demands made by Japan to the Chinese government that would give Japan economic and political power in China. The Chinese government eventually accepted the demands, causing increased tensions between Japan and China.
