The Tulsa riot, also known as the Tulsa massacre, began when a group of white men attempted to lynch a young black man accused of assaulting a white woman. Black veterans who had recently returned from fighting in World War I tried to prevent the lynching, and this sparked a violent confrontation. The white mob then attacked and burned down the thriving black neighborhood of Greenwood, resulting in the deaths of at least 300 African Americans.
