The Berlin Blockade was a reaction by the Soviet Union to the establishment of a separate currency in western Berlin's occupied zones. In 1948, the Soviet Union cut off all rail, road, and water access to West Berlin, which was located deep within Soviet-controlled East Germany, in an attempt to force the Western powers to abandon the city. The blockade lasted for almost a year, and was ultimately lifted after the Western powers delivered supplies by air in what became known as the Berlin Airlift.
