Radio waves and a magnetic field are used to view soft tissue during MRI. This test is especially useful in diagnosing tumors, disc disease, avascular necrosis, ligament tears, cartilage tears, and osteomyelitis. MRIs can have open or closed chambers. The client should be advised that the procedure is painless but the machine will make loud tapping noises and may cause claustrophobia in some clients inside a closed chamber. MRI is contraindicated in clients with aneurysm clips, metallic implants such as ICDs, pacemakers, electronic devices, hearing aids, and shrapnel.
