Quipus, or khipus, are an ancient system of record-keeping involving knotted strings, used by various Andean cultures, including the Incas. While they are known to have been used for record-keeping and possibly even for narrative recording, there is no evidence that as many as 700 quipus have been fully deciphered and translated in a way that would imply a direct translation of a written or spoken language. The understanding of quipus is still largely based on the context in which they were found and comparative analysis.
