A drawback to using the toluidine blue dye on the surface of a lesion to detect cellular changes is that inflammatory cells, often present with a lesion, also take up the dye stain and make interpretation of the test difficult. Toluidine blue dye often is used, however, during biopsy to define margins of the lesions and to discover secondary lesions.
