The Covenant Chain was a series of alliances and agreements made between the British colonies in North America and the Iroquois Confederacy, particularly the Mohawk nation, in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It enhanced the alliance between the British and the Iroquois in New York, giving the colonists greater protection and access to Iroquois territories, and also helped the Iroquois maintain power in the region. It did not have anything to do with church membership, the sharing of the Great Lakes region between the French and British, or religious communion in the colonies.
