The tm package has the readDoc command but it used the "antiword" package, which in turn only works with Word 2003 and earlier (not .docx). Quanteda has a companion package, "readtext", which can convert Word files but it itself does not read Word files. The tidytext package does not read Word files. However, there are other approaches for reading .docx files than textreadr.
