According to Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the Constitution, the President must be a natural-born American citizen; naturalized citizens may not assume the office, regardless of how old they were at the time of their naturalization. This has affected the presidential line of succession on (rare) occasions: President Bill Clinton's second Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, was a naturalized American citizen. In the unlikely event that President Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, the Speaker of the House, and President Pro Tempore of the Senate had all died or been rendered unable to serve, Albright would have been next in line to assume the presidency. However, she ultimately would have been bypassed in the line of succession due to her citizenship status.
