The 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent yielded India and Pakistan, which were apportioned to Hindus and Muslims, respectively. (India was officially a secular nation, but culturally it was predominantly Hindu.) Prior to Indian independence from Britain, which was achieved in 1947, the disparate people under colonial rule managed to live together peacefully (for the most part) until the 1920s. Nevertheless, the All-India Muslim League was formed in the early years of the 20th century to champion formal division between the two religious factions. The conflict became heated over the next two decades, and, despite a considerable movement to keep India unified, the dispute turned violent as the British Raj was dissolved. The partition was ultimately rushed as in 1947 as the Indians and would-be Pakistanis rapidly neared the brink of a bloody civil war. The partition followed the Mountbatten Plan, which divided the area along the Radcliffe Line. As of 2013, the relationship between India and Pakistan remains volatile.
