Lyndon B. Johnson nominated Thurgood Marshall to the Supreme Court in 1967, making Marshall the first African American to serve on the US Supreme Court. Before serving on the Supreme Court, Marshall had successfully argued a number of cases before the Supreme Court, including the landmark Brown v. Board of Education. Since Marshall, there has been only one other African American Supreme Court Justice, Clarence Thomas.
