They were the only signers who went on to become presidents (Washington and Madison did not sign the Declaration). During the Revolution, both men were great friends, but political differences took over when they served together as president and vice president, making them became bitter foes for years. Near the end of their lives, Abigail Adams suggested her husband start writing his old friend again. He did and the former presidents began a correspondence that lasted until their deaths.
