Although the British and the Dutch had been fighting over trade, the anti-Catholic British and William of Orange shared a dislike of Louis XIV, whose attempt to dominate Europe represented a threat to both the British and the Dutch. Britain was less concerned with French territorial expansion than the Dutch were; however, the thought of a return to a powerful Catholic empire on the continent caused great concern.
