Phospholipase C hydrolyzes phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2), a membrane phospholipid, into two secondary messengers: inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) and diacylglycerol (DAG). IP3 is soluble and diffuses through the cytoplasm to the ER where it stimulates the release of calcium ions. Diacylglycerol remains in the membrane and, along with calcium, activates protein kinase C (PKC). However, PKC is not directly produced by the action of phospholipase C, but rather activated by the products.
