An experimental psychologist thought that there was a relationship between people's problem-solving ability and their parents' attitudes toward authority. In addition, the psychologist thought that anxiety might affect problem-solving ability. In this experiment, 12 participants were chosen whose parents were authoritarian and 12 were chosen whose parents were very nonauthoritarian. Anxiety was manipulated in the experiment by the instructions given to the participants. There were three different sets of instructions. Each participant solved a set of complex problems.
