Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) increases water retention by the body by encouraging the reabsorption of water from the distal convoluted tubules of the kidneys. As the absolute amount of water in the bloodstream rises, the relative concentration of serum sodium (and the osmolality of the blood) falls-that is, ADH makes the blood less concentrated in sodium ions. ADH has no great effect on serum potassium concentrations. The mineralocorticoid aldosterone alters serum potassium concentrations. It increases them by stimulating potassium reuptake from the renal tubules. A similar effect is achieved by the potassium-sparing diuretic, spironolactone.
