In a healthy pregnancy, the fertilized ovum is swept from the fallopian tubes into the uterus, where it implants in the endometrium and begins to take nourishment and grow. When the ovum implants in the fallopian tubes (or in the ovary, peritoneum, or the cervix), it is considered to be misplaced (ectopic). Ectopic pregnancies occur in about 1 in 150 pregnancies and may prove fatal to the mother. Symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy (pain, vaginal bleeding, or shock, among others) typically occur 6 to 12 weeks after conception.
