Teaching for clients having scheduled ostomy operations should ideally begin prior to being hospitalized. Clients will be too anxious in pre-op for this teaching. The day after the operation may find the client in pain and groggy from opioid analgesics. Teaching on the day of discharge is too late for this complex skill.
