McArdle disease is characterized by a deficiency in muscle glycogen phosphorylase, which impairs the breakdown of glycogen to glucose-1-phosphate, thus reducing the ability to derive energy from glycogen.  McArdle disease is a glycogen storage disease of the muscle glycogenoses family.
