Carnitine is required for the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for beta-oxidation. It forms a complex with fatty acids, allowing their passage across the mitochondrial membrane.  During the pathway of fatty acid oxidation the molecules are first activated by attachment of CoA generating a fatty acyl-CoA derivative. The fatty acyl-CoA derivatives are then substrates for the enzyme carnitine palmitoyltransferase I, which substitutes carnitine for CoA generating a fatty acyl-carnitine which can then be transported across the outer mitochondrial membrane.
