Homologous pairs of chromosomes have the same genes for the same traits, but they may have different versions (alleles) of those genes. For example, you may have one homologous pair of chromosomes that both have the gene for eye color, but one chromosome may have the allele for blue eyes and the other may have the allele for brown eyes.
