Lactate produced in skeletal muscle cells during heavy exercise is transported to the liver where it is converted back to pyruvate through the process of gluconeogenesis. The pyruvate can then be used in the liver for energy generation or converted to glucose and released into the bloodstream to provide energy to other tissues in the body. This process is known as the Cori cycle.
