Enzymatic secretion follows stimulation by cholecystokinin and acetylcholine (from the parasympathetic vagus nerve). Once in the small intestine, activated pancreatic enzymes inhibit the release of more cholecystokinin and acetylcholine. This feedback mechanism inhibits the secretion of more pancreatic enzymes. Acetylcholine is liberated from pancreatic branches of the vagus nerve during the cephalic phase of digestion.
