Pyrogens are substances that can cause an increase in body temperature and trigger a fever response. They do this by acting on the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that controls body temperature. Pyrogens can be produced by the body in response to infection, or can be introduced from external sources such as bacteria or viruses. They do not produce pus, interfere with the inflammatory response, cause nausea and vomiting, or cause vasoconstriction and shivering.
