Both the inferior longitudinal and superior longitudinal muscle groups run anterior to posterior,however the inferior lies near the ventral (underside)surface of the tongue.Not surprisingly,the superior group is located on the top,or dorsal,surface of the tongue.The transverse group runs from side to side;the vertical group runs from top to bottom (dorsal to ventral).These four muscle groups are intrinsic in origin because they start and end wholly within the tongue.
