U.S. troops occupied the Mexican capital, Mexico City, during the Mexican-American War. The war began in 1846 and lasted until 1848. The Alamo occurred in 1836 during the Texas Revolution, prior to the Mexican-American War. While there was fighting in California, much of the major battles occurred in Mexico. There was no American revolt in California that led to a monarchy. The Whigs did not support Polk's policies during the war.
