Sunnites believe that the writings of companions of Muhammad regarding various problems are legitimate laws. They also recognize the authority of the Koran as the primary source of Islamic law, but they accept the validity of the Hadiths (sayings or deeds of the Prophet Muhammad) and the Sunnah (the example of the Prophet's life) as additional sources of religious authority. Sunnites do not believe that only the descendants of Ali are legitimate rulers, as this is a belief held by Shi'ites. They also do not believe that all religious authority rests with the Umayyads. The idea that only Arab Muslims can become religious teachers is a misconception and not a belief held by Sunnites.
