Mitosis is the cell division process that results in the formation of two identical daughter cells. During mitosis, the duplicated chromosomes line up along the equator of the cell and are separated into two identical sets that move to opposite poles of the cell. In contrast to meiosis, which requires homologous chromosomes to align with one another and undergo crossing over, mitosis does not require homologous chromosomes to do so.
