Divergent plate boundaries are characterized by the movement of plates away from each other. At these boundaries, new oceanic crust is formed through seafloor spreading. In contrast to divergent boundaries, convergent plate boundaries are characterized by the movement of plates towards each other. At these boundaries, crust is destroyed as one plate is forced beneath the other in a process called subduction. At some convergent boundaries, such as those around the Pacific Ring of Fire, volcanic activity and earthquakes are common.
