During the early Roman Republic, Rome expanded slowly and extended the Latin right to many of the cities it conquered. This allowed Rome to gradually acquire a larger territory and more resources without inciting too much hostility or resistance from conquered peoples. Rome also relied on citizen soldiers, rather than mercenaries, and maintained an agrarian-based economy with a strong emphasis on farming. Trade was important, but not the primary means of support.
